Applications Currently Open – Click Here

Closing Date: 16th February 2018

The Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity is again offering to fund a surgical trainee to undertake a surgical scientist PhD programme. These are typically three-year research programmes which are supervised jointly by an academic and a clinician. We have two neurosurgical programmes which have been accepted on this year’s portfolio and would be eager to see whether any neurosurgical trainee may be interested.

Summaries of the two available projects:

The key elements of this PhD programme are:

  • To provide a full-time research opportunity for 5 trainee surgeons (one appointment per year) to complete a UCL PhD over 3 years
  • To ensure that each PhD candidate is supervised by an ICH research leader and a practising GOSH consultant surgeon, working in partnership
  • To develop a PhD project that is based on the highest quality science and has relevance to any area of clinical paediatric surgical practice at GOSH
  • To attract the best possible PhD candidates to the scheme in order to provide a new cadre of paediatric surgical scientists for the coming decades

The GOSHCC PhD studentship award will fund the following:

  • F/T clinical trainee salary for 3 years
  • Generous research costs
  • A conference travel budget
  • UCL PhD fees

Interested neurosurgical trainees should contact Mr Kristian Aquilina (kristian.aquilina@gosh.nhs.uk) for further details.
